Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint Season Changes

By Rallysprint, Tarmac Rallysprint, Wheelspin

The immensely popular Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint Series held over summer at Sydney Dragway has been forced to change the dates for the 2021/22 season. Construction delays at the Dragway and Speedway complex has led the organising committee to remove the November round and add a round on January 6th.

The Event Director and NSSCC President, Brett Middleton, said he didn’t want to shorten the series because he knows competitors are itching to get behind the wheel and compete.

“What a year it’s been”, Middleton said. “With everything that’s occurred with lockdowns, and very little motorsport happening, we knew the Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint was going to be popular. We have over 100 entries already for round one, and more are still coming in.”

“We didn’t want to change the dates, but we also didn’t want to shorten the course like we had to last season. So by removing November and adding the 6th of January, it means we still have four rounds and we can use the new longer course we planned.”

“The major construction works at the Dragway Complex are running behind schedule and the bitumen surfacing in the new car park area may not be ready, so it made sense to re-arrange the dates and give competitors the opportunity to compete on a longer course.”, Middleton concluded.

The new dates for the series are:

  • Round 1 – 16th of December, 2021
  • Round 2 – 6th of January, 2022
  • Round 3 – 10th February, 2022
  • Round 4 – 10th March 2022

CLUB LEVEL AND JUNIOR MOTORSPORT SUFFERS CRUEL BLOW

By Rallysprint, Tarmac Rallysprint

The popular Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint Series held over summer at the Sydney Dragway appears to have joined the long list of cancelled events in 2020, but not because of the current COVID pandemic.

The event, organised by the North Shore Sporting Car Club, has had a key focus on the safe development of Junior drivers and driving skills and the Rallysprint series has run successfully for the last 8 years.

Whilst the event is hotly contested by some of Australia’s leading drivers it is also extremely popular with beginners and junior drivers. The event even attracting support from a major vehicle manufacturer committed to the development of safe driving standards.

However, yesterday the club was given with the disappointing news that the dates were no longer viable and there were no suitable alternatives for the coming season.

“Publicity had already begun and we had received several entries for the first round on the 8th of October, but at this stage the event will not proceed at its current venue” said Brett Middleton, the President of North shore Sporting Car Club.

“Disappointingly, we also no longer have access to a grassed area leased from Sydney Dragway for holding Motorkana’s and Gymnkana’s.” added Middleton. The grassed area will be used to re-locate excavations from extensions to the car park in the main Dragway complex.

The club now hopes that through the support of the NSW Office of Sport and the Western Sydney Parklands Trust that it can recover and rebuild for the future.

“We hope for a solution to provide better access to club level motorsport within the new master plan for the motorsport precinct,” concluded Middleton.

Background

The Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint series is a closed motorsport event held within the confines of Sydney Dragway, using the bitumen car parks and access roads. The Rallysprint series is held on Thursday nights, during the daylight savings summer months. Typically renting the venue at a time and day of the week that does not interfere with other events.

The Rallysprint won the Best Motorsport event in NSW for 2019 at the Motorsport Australia annual awards and on average attracts over 450 entries per annum. Approximately half are either under 18 years old or motorsport beginners looking for a safe venue to learn driving skills. The event injects over $700,000 annually into the NSW motoring economy.

The club’s other location started as an unused parcel of Dragway land that the Club developed for use as a successful junior Training facility for safer driving. Children and teenagers as young as 12 can safely learn to drive at this facility under the guidance of experienced motorsport mentors and governance of Motorsport Australia.

The Dragway leases the land from the Western Sydney Parklands Trust.

HARDING WINS TARMAC RALLYSPRINT ROUND 1

By Events, Rallysprint, Results, Tarmac Rallysprint

The first round of the 2019/2020 Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint Series was won by Michael Harding in a Subaru WRX STi. The car is purpose built for tarmac rallying and it was Hardings first appearance in his tarmac spec rally car at this event, having previously competed in his gravel spec version of the Subaru. Harding had his engine tuner Benjamin Perry sitting in the co-drivers seat.

FULL RESULTS

“I invited Benny to come down and jump in the car and help us with some data and have some fun as a bit of a thank you for him for all the many, many hours of hard work he’s put into the car,” said Harding.

“Actually sitting in the car and experiencing it is just mind blowing” added Perry

The event at Sydney Dragway attracted a quality field of 85 cars. Previous winner and event favourite Phil Heafey broke the driveline of his Lancer EVO on the start line of the second stage and was forced to retire. His main rival was Michael Caine, who usually competes in an RX7 and has challenged Heafey for the win at many previous rounds of the series. But Caine decided to bring a Holden Commodore Ute to the first round to try something a bit different and “have a bit of fun”.

Troy and Gary Nicolson finished on the second step of the Podium and blasted the HSV Commodore Coupe 4 around the special stage to be just 2.9 seconds behind Harding’s Subaru at the end of the night. Jake and Ian Lambie were 3rd in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 5.

It was a trying night for North Shore Sporting Car Club organisers who had to contend with 45km/h westerly winds disrupting course setup and making barrier placement extremely difficult. But in the end, the event started on time and was praised by competitors. The first round used a new starting location adding an extra 400m to the technical course.

The first round of the Summer series was also the first time the event included a coaching and mentoring programme specifically for Juniors. The GFB Junior Development Program included coaching from Rally Ace Brendan Reeves and Professional Co-Driver Dale Moscatt. The three juniors entered in the programme for the first round were Tom Donohue, Louise Taylor and Taylor Gill and were driving a Hyundai N-Performance Hot Hatch. The competition between the juniors was intense, with 15 year-old Gill beating Donohue by just eight tenths of a second.

The 2nd round of the series will be held on a Tuesday night the weekend after the WRC event in Coffs Harbour and entries are now open. The Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint is open to both experienced rally drivers through to novice and first-time competitors. The event is 100% asphalt, conducted on private roads within Sydney Dragway precinct. The event is run as a special stage rally with cars starting at 30 second intervals. To compete at the Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint Series, entrants need to be over 14 years old. No drivers licence or vehicle rego is needed.
